Martin Pibworth became Chief Executive of SSE in July 2025, bringing extensive experience from a career spanning more than two decades within the company. His appointment reflects a long progression through a range of commercial, energy-market and strategic leadership positions, giving him broad knowledge of the energy sector and SSE's operations.
Pibworth joined SSE in 1998, initially working as an energy trader. This early experience provided him with a strong understanding of energy markets and trading activities, as well as the commercial factors that influence the energy industry. Over the course of his career, he moved into increasingly senior positions, developing expertise across different areas of SSE's business.
One of his significant leadership roles was Managing Director of Energy Portfolio Management, where his responsibilities involved areas closely connected to the management of SSE's energy portfolio and market activities. He subsequently became Managing Director of Wholesale, further expanding his experience in energy markets and the commercial side of the business.
Pibworth later took on the role of Chief Commercial Officer. In this position, his responsibilities covered a broad range of activities, including renewables, thermal generation, energy markets and customer solutions. The breadth of this role gave him experience across several important parts of SSE's business and connected commercial strategy with the company's generation and energy activities.
His career progression within SSE has therefore involved experience across energy trading, wholesale markets, generation, renewables, infrastructure investment and commercial strategy. This combination of operational and commercial knowledge provides him with a broad perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing a major energy company.
As Chief Executive, Pibworth leads SSE following a career that has been closely connected with the development and operation of the company.
